(from ProLiteracy Worldwide)
"In the U.S., 30 million people over age 16 — 14 percent of the country’s adult population — don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application."
"The United States ranks fifth on adult literacy skills when compared to other industrialized nations."
"Adult low literacy can be connected to almost every socio-economic issue in the United States...more than 60 percent of all state and federal corrections inmates can barely read and write...low literacy’s effects cost the U.S. $225 billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment."
According to the United States Census Bureau data in 2007, the Poverty Threshold was $10,590 for an individual and during this same time roughly 24% of adults 18 and over in the United States had less than a high school diploma. Median earnings for someone without a high school diploma was $19,000 compared to someone with a diploma (coming in at $26,700 and $46,200 with a bachelor's degree).
Many adults want to get a better education but can't afford college costs or don't have access to it - as is the case for many living in remote parts of our world. Not getting a good education can prevent you from experiencing the many joys of life. And because of poor education, many end up living in poverty, women being one of the largest group's affected.
