Welcome to the Literacy 'n' Poverty Project's website. Take a look around the site to learn more about who we are, what we do and how you can get involved.

DID YOU KNOW?
In 2007, according to the United States Census Bureau, the Poverty Threshold was $10,590 for an individual and during this time, roughly 24% of adults 18 and over had less than a high school diploma.
Adults without a high school diploma or even the most basic of literacy skills - written, verbal and technical - will find it difficult advancing in the workplace. Helping your kids with their homework, grocery shopping or writing your resume becomes a hassle.
Millions of illiterate adults around the world find themselves in this situation. They often make up the majority of families living in poverty. With that said, it's hard not to see how inextricably linked the two really are.
On the ProLiteracy Worldwide website you'll find some startling statistics:
"In the U.S., 30 million people over age 16 — 14 percent of the country’s adult population — don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application."
"Adult low literacy can be connected to almost every socio-economic issue in the United States...more than 60 percent of all state and federal corrections inmates can barely read and write...low literacy’s effects cost the U.S. $225 billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment."
These are the things we care about and with your support, WE CAN MAKE CHANGE A REALITY.
